Four months after losing to Poonsawat Krataingdaenggym, former WBA Super Bantamweight champion Somsak Sithchatchawal (now known as Somsak Singwangcha) scored a 6 round points victory over an Indonesian fighter known as Zoelfidal. He weighed in at 130 lbs for the bout. Singwangcha’s promoter, Kokiet Panichayarom has plans to get the Thai a title shot at 126 lbs. some time in the nest year. Personally, I think it’s ludicrous to think Somsak can win another title.
Some blame his weight for his loss to Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym, however he has been stunned often by lesser opponents and the brutal bout with Monshipour clearly took it’s toll on the Lampang native. In today’s bout, Zoelfidal landed often and Somsak looked shaky throughout the bout. His chin is gone, his legs are gone, and he eats way too many punches for his own good. Should he face another world rated opponent at 126 lbs., I suspect he’ll have a hard go of it. Should he face WBA champion Chris John, the Indonesian will batter him at will before finally stopping him in the middle rounds. Unfortunately, Somsak is a shot fighter – mark my words.
In other news, Veeraphol Sahaprom has denied he has retired from boxing. For now, Sahaprom is preparing Napapol Kittisakchokchai for his September bout against Toshiaki Nishioka for the WBC super bantamweight interim title. Frankly, that there is a title fight itself is ridiculous – in September no less – Israel Vasquez is the true champion and there’s no need for an interim title fight. This is boxing, I guess. Anyhow, Sahaprom is taking time off to heal and may return once again…I sure hope not, his loss to Malinga was painful.
Some sad news…Thongchai Tor Silachai has been arrested for selling amphetamines to an undercover police office. The four-division Lumpini stadium Muay Thai champion was arrested attempting to sell approximately $50 of Ya-Ba, Thailand’s version of speed, to an undercover officer. When asked why he was selling drugs, he told officers his boxing purses were cut in half and he could no longer afford to make the payments on the two homes he was building.
Until later….
