Abrahams Mows Down Miranda

June 22, 2008

To see Arthur Abrahams put down Edison Miranda forced me to remember one thing; the technically superior boxer wins in most cases. A fighter can have a granite chin, be tougher than buffalo leather, and have great power but a boxer with sound skills nearly always comes out the victor. This was clearly the case in this bout. I honestly thought Miranda would have made a few changes to his style and fought Abrahams slightly differently but once I saw him having problems breaking through the champions guard I knew he wasn’t going to be able to get the job done. It was a magnificent performance by Abrahams and he’s a handful for anyone in the division – anyone.

I was slightly disappointed in some of the other fighters that engaged in bouts this weekend. First – Ronald Hearns looks to have the same style and body type of Tommy. But he also gets hit too much and was hit quite easily by his opponent. If he were fighting someone who was a little more skilled, he would have ended up on his back. He eats way too many left hooks.

Andre Berto did as was expected, knocking out Miki Rodriguez, but he also looks to have a few chinks in his armor. Excellent offensive skills, no doubt, and he’s athletic and naturally gifted – but he’s a bit lackadaisical at times and gets hit with punches when he shouldn’t. Anytime you get in the ring you’re going to get hit, no matter how good you are, but Berto got hit when he shouldn’t have.

It didn’t surprise me to see Raul Marquez rough up Giovanni Lorenzo and get the decision. What did surprise me was the judges scorecards – they had Marquez winning by one point and Lorenzo had a point taken away for head butting him. One of the judges even had Lorenzo winning the last round – someone must have been hitting the crack pipe before the bout because after the first half of the fight Marquez too over and should have won by 3-4 points. Press row scored the bout as it should have been but sometimes I wonder just what the judges are watching.

As someone who knows many of the judges I’ll say this – without naming names – some of these guys are great but some lack the focus needed to judge fights. Imagine Mr. Magoo scoring a boxing match and you get an idea of what I’m talking about.

It’s Sunday night and I’m bushed. Before I go to bed I need to finish up an article for the Phuket Gazette and I’d like to chill for a couple hours in front of the TV. Until later…
