I don’t know how I ended up a boxing writer and photographer. It just sort of happened. I didn’t go to school to become a writer or photographer although I did take a host of literature and creative writing classes as well as some photography classes.
After deciding this is what I should do with my life, a few realities set in. Writing and photography can be an excellent way to make a living; exciting, unique, and fun. It can also be day after day of looking for work, looking for decent projects, and figuring out what to schedule next. I’m bitching about it – you’ve got to take the good with the bad. The trick is to keep the good at the maximum and the bad at the minimum. Easier said than done.
Thailand is notorious for it’s lousy fights – lousy in the sense there are an awful lot of mismatches. As someone who knows a fair amount about the sport of boxing, it really seems a waste of talent to consistently match world class Thais against piss-poor opposition. This is boxing I guess. If it were slightly better I could get away with only writing about and shooting boxing. But it’s not. So I’m forced to write travel articles, expat information books, and photograph anything and everything I can possibly make a buck from.
Hey, I’m not complaining. Life isn’t always fair, everyone isn’t born with a silver spoon in their mouth and sometimes, there are show after show of nothing but mismatches. It is for this reason I look forward to the Thailand Open tennis tournament, the Phuket Volleyball tournament, and the Singapore Grand Prix.
Not to mention the Beijing Olympics if I can get a few sponsors to assist me. Again I will ask – if there’s anyone out there reading this who has some spare cash they’re willing to part with for some photos of the Olympic Games and some advertising – by all means get in touch with me ASAP.
